1. Neiman Marcus Limited Edition Fighter: $11 million
The Fighter was built by Confederate Motorcycles for the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue. Only one was offered, through an online auction that opened at $110,000, and the winning bid was reported at $11 million.
It has a single-piece machined frame and a 120 cubic inch V-twin engine. The final price has been widely reported but the buyer has never been named, so it should be treated as a reported figure.
Confederate, based in Alabama, was known for heavy, machined-from-solid cruisers built in small numbers. The company later changed its name to Curtiss Motorcycles and moved to electric bikes.
2. 1949 AJS E90 Porcupine: $7 million
The AJS E90 Porcupine was a works racing bike, and only four were built. Les Graham rode one to the first 500cc world championship in 1949.
It used a 500cc twin-cylinder engine with double overhead camshafts. One example reportedly changed hands privately for about $7 million.
3. Ecosse ES1 Spirit: $3.6 million
The ES1 Spirit is a hyperbike from Ecosse Moto Works in the United States. It uses a carbon fibre body, weighs about 256 pounds and is claimed to exceed 200 mph.
Its 1,000cc four-cylinder engine is a structural part of the chassis, as in a racing car. The price is the figure Ecosse gave when the bike was announced.
4. Hildebrand & Wolfmüller: $3.5 million
The Hildebrand & Wolfmüller of 1894 was the first motorcycle built in series and the first to be called a motorcycle. Its two-cylinder, four-stroke engine drove the rear wheel directly.
Few survive, and the $3.5 million figure is a reported value for one of the remaining examples rather than a recent auction result.
5. BMS Nehmesis: $3 million
The BMS Nehmesis is a custom chopper with a 1,700cc engine and a 24-carat gold finish over much of the bike.
It is a showpiece rather than a production motorcycle, and the $3 million price is the figure reported for the build.
6. Harley-Davidson Cosmic Starship: $1.5 million
The Cosmic Starship is a Harley-Davidson V-Rod hand-painted by the artist Jack Armstrong. It is the only motorcycle he painted, which is the reason for its value.
It reportedly sold for about $1.5 million, a price set by the artwork more than by the bike underneath.
7. 1915 Cyclone V-Twin: $1.32 million
This is the most expensive motorcycle ever sold at public auction. The 1915 Cyclone V-Twin made $1.32 million at Mecum Las Vegas, held from 29 January to 1 February 2025, and was the first motorcycle to pass $1 million at a public sale.
Cyclone was a short-lived American maker known for its advanced overhead camshaft engine, and very few of its bikes survive.
8. 1938 Crocker Twin: $880,000
At the same Mecum sale, a 1938 Crocker Twin sold for $880,000, the highest price ever paid at public auction for a Crocker.
Crocker built big V-twins in Los Angeles in the late 1930s and early 1940s in very small numbers. They were among the fastest road motorcycles of their time.
9. Dodge Tomahawk V10: $550,000
The Dodge Tomahawk was shown in 2003 as a concept powered by the 8.3-litre V10 engine from the Dodge Viper. It has four wheels, two at the front and two at the rear.
Replicas were offered through Neiman Marcus at about $550,000 each. They are not street legal, so they were sold as display pieces.
10. Ecosse Founder’s Edition Ti XX: $300,000
The Founder’s Edition Ti XX was another limited Ecosse model, with a titanium frame and a large supercharged engine. Only 13 were made.
It shows how small American builders have priced hand-made machines well above the most expensive mass-produced superbikes.
