In brief
- The Tibaldi Fulgor Nocturnus is the most expensive pen ever made, reportedly sold for about $8 million.
- Montblanc’s Taj Mahal Limited Edition is second at a reported $2 million, with ten pieces made.
- Montblanc holds three of the top four places, including the $1.5 million Boheme Royal.
- Aurora makes one $1.47 million Diamante a year, with 1,919 De Beers diamonds on a platinum barrel.
As of October 2026, the most expensive pen ever made is the Tibaldi Fulgor Nocturnus, a fountain pen set with 945 black diamonds and 123 rubies that reportedly sold at auction for about $8 million. Montblanc holds three of the next four places, led by its Taj Mahal limited edition at a reported $2 million.
At this level, a pen is closer to a piece of jewellery than a writing tool. Prices come from solid gold and platinum bodies, thousands of diamonds and gemstones, and very small production runs, often a single piece. Montblanc, Caran d’Ache, Aurora and Montegrappa dominate the list.

3. Montblanc Johannes Kepler Stella Nova Limited Edition 1: $1.5 million

This one-off Montblanc honours the astronomer Johannes Kepler. Its white gold body is set with 5,294 sapphires and 570 diamonds, along with a 6.2-carat D-flawless diamond, the top grade for colour and clarity.
It belongs to Montblanc’s High Artistry range of gem-set pens. With more than 5,800 stones, it carries far more gems than any other pen on this list.
4. Montblanc Boheme Royal: $1.5 million

The Boheme Royal is a pocket-sized pen made from 18-carat white gold and covered in more than 1,430 diamonds. Goldspot notes that 19 of them sit on the Montblanc snowflake logo.
It has a retractable 18-carat gold nib, a signature of Montblanc’s Boheme line.
5. Aurora Diamante: $1.47 million

Italian maker Aurora gives the Diamante a solid platinum barrel set with 1,919 De Beers diamonds, more than 30 carats in total. The nib is 18-carat gold.
Goldspot reports that Aurora makes only one Diamante a year, which keeps it among the rarest pens in production.
6. Caran d’Ache 1010 Diamonds: $1 million to $1.28 million

Swiss maker Caran d’Ache drew on watchmaking for this pen, with a gear-style design in 18-carat solid white gold. It carries about 850 diamonds in brilliant, emerald and baguette cuts.
Sources differ on the price. Goldspot lists it at $1 million, while Dubai Sotheby’s International Realty puts it at $1.28 million.
7. Anita Tan Heaven Gold: $995,000
Designed by Anita Tan in 2010, the Heaven Gold is made of 18-karat gold and set with 1,888 diamonds weighing 48 carats, plus 161 coloured diamonds. Only eight were made.
8. Montblanc and Van Cleef & Arpels Mystery Masterpiece: $730,000

9. Caran d’Ache Gothica: $406,000

10. Montegrappa Dragon Bruce Lee set: $290,000

Italian maker Montegrappa made this set in tribute to martial artist Bruce Lee. It uses celluloid, 18-carat gold and black and white diamonds, and comes with a crystal ink pot.
What makes a pen this expensive?
The writing parts of these pens, the nib and the ink system, cost a small share of the total. Most of the price comes from the body: solid 18-carat gold, white gold or platinum, set with hundreds or thousands of stones by hand.
Scarcity adds the rest. At least five of the ten pens here were made as single pieces or in runs of ten or fewer, and several were built with jewellers such as Van Cleef & Arpels or used stones from De Beers. Aurora goes further and limits the Diamante to one pen a year.
How we ranked these pens
We ranked each pen by the highest price reported for it by the sources below. Where sources disagree, as with the Caran d’Ache 1010, we show both figures. Prices are in US dollars, are not adjusted for inflation, and in most cases are list prices rather than confirmed sale prices.
Some pens from older lists now fall outside the top ten. Montegrappa’s Ancient Mexican Civilizations, a run of 20 pens in 18-carat solid gold, is listed by Goldspot at $143,000.
