How Johnny Depp made his money

Most of Depp’s fortune came from films. Captain Jack Sparrow made him one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. Across the Pirates series, his salaries and profit shares reportedly topped $300 million.
He also had a long run of hits with Tim Burton, including Edward Scissorhands, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Alice in Wonderland. His production company, Infinitum Nihil, founded in 2004, adds producer fees on some projects.
Salary and earnings
Depp was paid about $10 million for the first Pirates film in 2003. For Dead Man’s Chest, a $20 million base salary plus about $40 million in backend profits took his total to about $60 million. He earned about $55 million for On Stranger Tides.
Away from films, he has been the face of Dior’s Sauvage fragrance since 2015. In 2023 he reportedly signed a three-year renewal worth more than $20 million, described as the largest men’s fragrance deal on record. His art has also sold well: about 780 prints from his 2022 “Friends and Heroes” collection raised about £3 million (about $3.6 million) within hours.
Spending, lawsuits and the Amber Heard trial

In 2017 Depp sued The Management Group, claiming mismanagement and more than $40 million in debt he had not known about. The firm countersued and said he had spent more than $75 million on 14 homes and kept about 40 staff. The case settled in 2018.
In 2020 he lost a UK libel case against the publisher of The Sun over an article describing him as a “wife beater”. In June 2022 a jury in Virginia found Amber Heard liable for defamation and awarded Depp $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages, which state law capped at $350,000. Heard was awarded $2 million on one counterclaim.
In December 2022 the case ended when Heard’s insurer agreed to pay Depp $1 million.
Assets: homes, island and property sales
Depp has sold several properties in recent years. Five penthouses in the Eastern Columbia Building in Los Angeles, bought for a combined $7.2 million in 2007 and 2008, sold for $10.9 million in 2017. His Kentucky horse farm sold for $1.35 million in 2020.
He still owns, or is reported to own, a 45-acre island in the Bahamas, Little Hall’s Pond Cay, and a Hollywood Hills compound. His estate in the south of France, renovated for a reported $10 million, has been listed for sale at prices of over $25 million and later about $55 million.
Early life and career

John Christopher Depp II was born on 9 June 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, the youngest of four children. His family settled in Miramar, Florida, in 1970, and his parents divorced in 1978.
His mother gave him a guitar at 12, and he left school at 16 to play music. A meeting with actor Nicolas Cage led to his film debut in A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). The TV series 21 Jump Street (1987 to 1990) made him a teen star.
He later played Gellert Grindelwald in two Fantastic Beasts films. He left the series in 2020 after Warner Bros. asked him to step down following the UK libel ruling. He also plays guitar in the rock band Hollywood Vampires, formed with Alice Cooper and Joe Perry, which reportedly toured Europe again in 2026.

Depp won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for Sweeney Todd (2007) and a Screen Actors Guild Award for the first Pirates film. He has three Oscar nominations for Best Actor, for Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Finding Neverland and Sweeney Todd.
