How Sean Combs made his money

Combs began as an intern at Uptown Records in New York while studying at Howard University. He rose to become a talent director, working with artists such as Mary J. Blige and Jodeci, before founding Bad Boy Records in 1993.
Bad Boy released music by The Notorious B.I.G., Faith Evans, 112 and Combs himself. His 1997 debut album as Puff Daddy, No Way Out, won a Grammy. He has won three Grammy Awards in total.
He later used his name to build businesses outside music. These included the clothing label Sean John, a long partnership with Diageo on Cîroc vodka and DeLeon tequila, and the cable network Revolt.
Businesses and earnings
| Business | Role | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Bad Boy Records | Founder, 1993 | Catalogue still owned, subject to legal claims |
| Sean John | Founder, 1998 | Sold in 2016, later bought back |
| Cîroc vodka | Partner with Diageo from 2007 | Diageo ended the deal |
| DeLeon tequila | Joint owner with Diageo from 2014 | Part of the Diageo dispute |
| Revolt | Founder, 2013 | Stepped down in 2023 |
The Cîroc deal was his biggest earner for many years. Under the 2007 agreement, Combs promoted the vodka in exchange for a share of profits. In 2023 he sued Diageo, and the company later ended the partnership. Combs stepped down as chairman of Revolt in 2023 after the first civil lawsuits against him were filed.
Sean John, launched in 1998, won the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for menswear designer of the year in 2004. Combs sold a majority stake in 2016 and bought the brand back in 2021 at a bankruptcy auction, for a price reported at about $7.6 million.
His Bad Boy catalogue remains a valuable asset. According to Social Life Magazine, income from it is now exposed to legal claims and possible civil judgments.

Assets: homes, cars and investments
Combs has owned large homes in the Holmby Hills area of Los Angeles and on Star Island in Miami Beach. Both properties were searched by federal agents in March 2024 as part of the investigation.
His legal costs, the end of the Diageo deal and the risk of civil judgments have reduced the value of his assets. Details of any recent property sales and his car collection have not been confirmed by reliable sources.
