1. 24K Gold Extreme Mountain Bike: $1 million
The House of Solid Gold, led by Hugh Power, launched this fat bike in late 2013 at $1 million. Nearly every part is electroplated in 24-carat gold, including the brake rotors.
The saddle and grips are covered in brown alligator leather, and the head badge is set with 600 black diamonds and 500 yellow sapphires. Production was limited to 13 bikes, and payment was accepted only by cashier’s cheque, money order or wire transfer.
2. Trek Butterfly Madone: $500,000
British artist Damien Hirst decorated this Trek Madone road bike with real butterfly wings lacquered onto the frame. Lance Armstrong rode it on the final stage of the 2009 Tour de France.
It sold at Sotheby’s in New York on 1 November 2009 for £318,000, about $500,000. Guinness World Records lists it as the most expensive bicycle sold at auction. The money went to Armstrong’s Livestrong cancer charity.
Armstrong was later stripped of his seven Tour de France titles in 2012 after a doping investigation. The bike’s value now rests mainly on Hirst’s name and the auction record rather than on its rider.
3. Trek Yoshitomo Nara Speed Concept: $200,000
This time trial bike was painted by the Japanese artist Yoshitomo Nara with his child-like figures and UFO graphics. It was one of several artist-designed Trek bikes Armstrong used during the 2009 Tour.
It sold for about $200,000 at the same charity auction as the Butterfly Madone, with the proceeds going to cancer research.
4. KAWS Trek Madone: $160,000
American artist KAWS painted this Madone with his “chomper” characters across the frame. It was also part of the 2009 Stages art project for Livestrong.
The bike sold at Sotheby’s for about $160,000. Like the other Stages bikes, it was built to be ridden in the race before being sold.
5. Aurumania Crystal Edition Gold Bike: $114,000
Aurumania, a Scandinavian brand, introduced its Crystal Edition Gold Bike around 2008. The frame is plated in 24-carat gold and set with more than 600 Swarovski crystals.
It was sold as a luxury city bike rather than a racing machine, and the price is the maker’s list price.
6. Trek Madone 7 Diamond: $75,000
The Madone 7 Diamond was made for a Lance Armstrong Foundation gala auction in 2005, where it reportedly raised about $75,000.
The paint scheme included real diamonds set into the finish. Very few were built, and it was never sold as a regular model.
7. Chrome Hearts x Cervélo: $60,000
Jewellery brand Chrome Hearts worked with Cervélo on this bike in 2010. It has custom black and red paint, silver cross details, leather trim and precious metal parts.
Only 10 were made, at about $60,000 each. Cervélo, a Canadian brand, is better known for racing bikes used in the Tour de France, which made the pairing with a jewellery house unusual.
8. Montante Luxury Gold Collection: $46,000
Italian brand Montante made this women’s cruiser with 24-carat gold leaf, about 11,000 Swarovski crystals and python leather on the saddle and grips.
It is designed for slow riding in style, with a wooden fender and a classic upright position.
9. eRockit: $44,000
The eRockit from Germany is a pedal-powered electric bike that rides more like a light motorcycle. The rider’s pedalling is boosted by an electric motor, and top speed is about 50 mph.
Because of its speed, it needs registration as a motor vehicle in most countries, which sets it apart from normal e-bikes.
10. Litespeed Blade: $40,788
The Litespeed Blade is a hand-built titanium road bike from the United States, made to order and fitted with top components such as Campagnolo Super Record.
It is the only bike in the top 10 that is a pure performance machine, priced on materials and build quality rather than decoration.
