Three auction records in one sale
No new car had ever sold for this much at public auction, and no electric car had come close. The sale also set a record for a charity lot. The previous high was $26 million in 2025 for a one-off Tailor Made Ferrari Daytona SP3, which also raised money for The Ferrari Foundation.
RM Sotheby’s waived its buyer’s premium, so the full $40 million goes to the foundation. The money supports the M-TECH Alfredo Ferrari technical school in Maranello and educational programmes in the United States.

Chassis 0 is the first production Luce and was built to US specification through Ferrari’s Tailor Made personalisation programme. The paint, called Madreperla, is a custom pearlescent finish that shifts from green to violet depending on the light.
It sits on dedicated wheels with white brake callipers and a white-background Ferrari shield. Inside, the seats are trimmed in Perla Le Mans metallic leather from Swiss hides, with Grigio Corvara on secondary surfaces. The car returns to Maranello after the sale and is due to reach its buyer in the first quarter of 2027.
The Ferrari Luce explained
The Luce (internal code F222) is Ferrari’s first fully electric model and its first five-seat car. Ferrari previewed it as the Elettrica at its Capital Markets Day on 9 October 2025 and revealed the finished car on 25 May 2026 near Rome.
It has four motors, one at each wheel, producing 282 hp at the front and 831 hp at the rear, for 1,035 hp in total. A 122 kWh structural battery runs on an 800-volt system, supports DC fast charging at up to 350 kW and gives a claimed range of more than 310 miles.
The design was developed with LoveFrom, the studio of Jony Ive and Marc Newson, working alongside Ferrari’s own teams. The car is a four-door liftback with centre-opening doors, active suspension and four-wheel steering. It is built in Maranello and costs €550,000 in Europe, which was about $640,000 at launch.
How it ranked at Monterey
The Luce was the second-highest sale of Monterey Car Week 2026. Only the 1964 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe CSX2300, which sold for $42,905,000 at Gooding Christie’s, fetched more. The McLaren F1 GTR chassis 10R came third at $34,655,000.
Ferrari models filled seven of the week’s top ten places. Our guide to the most expensive Ferraris in the world covers the classic cars that still hold the brand’s overall records, and our list of the most expensive cars in the world shows where new and classic models rank.
Why it matters
A charity first-chassis sale is not a guide to what a standard Luce is worth. It does show that Ferrari’s buyers were willing to back the brand’s first electric car at a record level in its launch year.
